I went to Public Bank ATM with my housemate Ricky to deposit the cash into landlord's banking account. Upon arrival, we found a red bag on top of the cash deposit machine, suspiciously I opened it up, and was surprised when I found out there were bundles of cash notes in the red color bag, immediately I closed it back.
We didn't know how much it was, but we were sure there were stacks of cash notes in that arm sized bag, cash notes were in blue and red color, might be RM10 and RM50 cash notes. We were stunned for seconds, wondering what should we do. And this thought stroke through my mind.
We could just go away, pretending we didn't know anything about the bag, another thought squeezed in immediately, if we leave the bag that way someone might find out and just take it away unresponsively, then victim would be the owner, the bag and contents might mean a lot to the owner, regardless the amount of money it contains. We tried to find authorities nearby, it was Sunday, bank office was closed therefore no one is on duty, I couldn't find security guard either. We couldn't do too obvious action as we didn't want to draw attention from people around. We tried to wave our hands calling the bypass police car, apparently it was raining heavily and we failed to catch the police's attention. It has been half an hour we stood in front of the cash deposit machine, pretended as the bag was ours and I randomly pressed on any buttons on the screen, just to make sure no one took the bag at the same time hoping that owner could come and claim the bag. I tried to call the ATM costumer service hub, but no one pick up the calls. Things became more tempting when people came into ATM room and started to notice we were standing in front of that particular cash deposit machine for unreasonably long. Thanks to lord, after few call attempts done by my housemate, we were connected to one of the staff from ATM customer service department. I talked to him and illustrate everything through mobile phone, his name was Vincent Chong, he told me to bring back the bag and return it to Public Bank branch manager the next morning, he mentioned he will be the witness if I am blamed on bringing the bag back to my place without any permission from authorities. We brought the bag back to our flat and I returned it back to Taman Connaught's branch Public Bank the next morning. Hours after, my phone was called by an unrecognized mobile number, I picked it up, heard a lady said, "Hello, am I talking to William? I'm the owner of red bag you found in Public Bank, I got my bag back, thank you very much for your kindness, really, thank you so much". Minutes later, she sent me an SMS, repeating the same "thank you" sentences. I saved her number under name of "Public Bank Red Bag Owner". By the way, I was still using Blackberry device back then (everyone else had upgraded to keypad-less smartphone).
